In a unanimous 11-0 vote, the California Coastal Commission determined on December 14 that the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) must continue to fund the Catalina Island Bad Eagle Recovery Program as part of the Montrose Settlement Restoration Program (MSRP) Final Resolution Plan (FRP). NOAA had previously determined that the lack of success and problems with the failure of Bald Eagle egg hatchings associated with continuing DDT pollution should lead to the program's abandonment. The Coastal Commission, on the other hand, ordered that NOAA redouble it's Bald Eagle efforts and fund the program for at least another ten years, or until such time as the Montrose DDT pollution is no longer destroying America's national bird.

As revealed this week in the LA Times, impending coastal destruction in Orange County and San Diego has something in common: In both cases, Republican politicians in Washington DC are using the federal government as a weapon of mass destruction of our coast by overriding federal law, California's jurisdiction and our coastal protection program.

The common link is Duncan Hunter (R-El Cajon). Hunter is working to "exempt" the OC toll road from the Endangered Species Act. The toll road, which is slated to go through San Onofre State Park, home to seven endangered and threatened species. Pave a State Park for a freeway, what a brilliant concept!

In championing the "exempting" of the US-Mexico Border Fence from compliance with the Coastal Act, Hunter is cheerleading a plan to build a 3 row fence which will clearcut endangered species habitat for 3 miles inland from the ocean as wide as a 6-lane freeway. The violence against nature so extreme, millions of yards of grading are required to level entire mountains and valleys, fill wetlands and destroy entire watersheds. What's worse is that Hunter is acting in knowing disregard of alternative plans that could achieve the same political ends without the vast coastal resources devastation.

For more Border Fence mania....check out this Blog.
