BHP Billiton’s offshore LNG terminal appears dead in the water

On Thursday, April 12th, 2007, three days after mobilizing at least 2,062 people to attend an LNG hearing in Oxnard, Sierra Club’s Great Coastal Places Campaign helped mobilize what the LA Times reported to be another 500 people in Santa Barbara to hammer the another nail in the coffin of BHP Billiton’s polluting Liquefied Natural Gas (“LNG”) terminal. The day long hearing ended with another tremendous win – a unanimous vote by the California Coastal Commission denying certification for the project – leaving the world’s largest mining corporation with little hope for their 40-year, $ 800 million project. And more support is needed tomorrow at the meeting of the California Coastal Commission at the Fess Parker Double Tree Resort Hotel in Santa Barbara, at 9:00 a.m. as the Coastal Commission will undertake its own, separate review of the same BHP LNG terminal that the State Lands Commisison denied on Monday evening.

Following an all-day public hearing that drew hundreds of opponents, a state commission voted Monday to reject the environmental impact report on a proposed $800-million floating liquefied natural gas terminal off the Ventura County coast — an action that could effectively kill the project.

The state Lands Commission voted 2 to 1 to reject the environmental study and not issue a lease for the BHP Billiton project. Democratic Lt. Gov. John Garamendi and state Controller John Chiang, both commissioners, voted against the project.
